Designed to address the housing shortage of the late 40s, industrialist and inventor Carl Strandlund pivoted his porcelain enameled gas station and hamburger stand into a company producing small, affordable homes with a goal of longevity and low maintenance. Over 70 years later, Strandlund’s goal is still being realized today. Photographer Dirk Fletcher has traveled to 16 states, photographing over 375 of these unique porcelain enamel homes over the last four years.
